You wouldn’t believe how many different ways people can spell “drum and bass” (drum n bass, drum & bass, drum ‘n bass, drum+bass, drum ‘n’ bass, etc.), but they should all match each other now. With these changes, it’s easier to score points and more fun to play.

We’ve started using the data that we collected through the MajorMiner game. We’re using it in two ways: making it searchable directly, and training autotaggers with it. The human search finds all of the clips that have had a particular tag applied to them by at least two people, sorted by the number of times it’s been applied. You can type a search directly into the search box, or browse through the top few. People are pretty good at finding things in music, as it turns out, check out british, u2, tambourine, and scratch. This search also takes advantage of the newly introduced canonicalization of tags, so that funk matches funky. But there are always ambiguity issues, e.g. club as lyric vs genre.

The machine search is a little more involved. We took all of the tags that had been applied to enough (35) clips and used them to train classifiers. Actually, we only used clips from half of the artists in our collection to train the classifiers, then we ranked all of the clips from the rest of the artists by each classifier’s output. This means we can look at all of those clips sorted by how much they appeal to the rap classifier, the saxophone classifier, the house classifier, and so on. I like how the guitar classifier catches Outkast’s acoustic guitar (!), but also the Jesus and Mary Chain’s fuzzed out guitar. For those of you interested in the details, we have a couple of papers that we’ve submitted recently describing them, but the gist is that we’re using the features from last MIREX and the usual SVM classifier.

Some thought went into the ranking of the tags on the main autotag page as well. Since we know the answers for some of the clips in the test set, and we ranked the tags by how well their classifier was able to learn them. Actually, we used a Bayesian estimate of the classification accuracy from the beta-binomial model to do the ranking more intelligently. The basic idea is that test accuracy is measured more accurately for tags with a lot of test examples, and less accurately for tags with few test examples. The measured accuracy of tags are then shrunk towards the overall mean accuracy in proportion to how well the model thinks they are estimated. So even though club has a better raw accuracy than rap, it was tested on many fewer examples, so it ends up below rap in the final ranking, i.e. the raw accuracy is more likely a random fluctuation than a meaningful result.

So go check out some of the creative ways our players have found to describe music, and describe some music yourself!

Violins are fragile instruments that must be treated with care. There are situations where violins may need to be repaired no matter how careful the owner is. When a violin needs to be fixed, it is important to go to a trained professional. There are some simple maintenance tips for violin owners that can prolong the life of the instrument.

It is important that people change the strings on their violins, as old strings tend to sound bad after a while. Most experts recommend changing the strings at least once a year, even if they do not seem to be a problem. It is also important not to put the strings on to tightly. Aside from making the violin out of tune, tight strings can warp the neck over time and cause great damage to the violin. People should also apply gentle wood polish to the violin’s body in order to keep it looking good.

Violin repair is a delicate art. It is important that whoever repairs a violin is skilled and knowledgeable. The violin can be permanently damaged if the person doing the repair makes any mistakes. Someone skilled in violin repair can take the instrument completely apart to fix any internal problems or make any necessary neck adjustments and reassemble it, leaving it as good as new. People should be sure not to use any type of chemicals on the violin as they can have adverse affects on the wood. It is a good idea to use similar materials to make and repair the violin. For example, fixing a hole in the violin’s body with oak instead of the spruce that it is made of could affect the violin’s tone.

Diddy’s Making the Band 3, first season finalist, Natasha nom de code: NIKITA gains millions of fans on her quest to mainstream stardom! Just a few years ago at the venturous age of 18, Natasha decided to take a chance at furthering her career by moving from her small native Texas town to the East Coast! New York, NY “Big City of Dreams,” no doubt her first choice being influenced by mainstream artists such as Mary J. Blige, Lauryn Hill, Nas, The Notorious BIG, and Jay-Z. Natasha settled in East Orange, NJ, where she got a taste of the inner city street life. Moving to the East Coast was a major culture shock and a huge transition for her, but she adapted quickly. Seizing the opportunity for a big break, she auditioned for Diddy’s Making The Band 3, and was selected to compete in the finals. Although she did not make the band, Natasha was able to network her way into signing with the prominent independent label She Records. Her first recording was “So In Love,” which became an instant hit among major label execs and A&R’s! But it wasn’t until Natasha recorded a rap free-style they caught wind of this alter ego La Femme NIKITA. After successfully recording a number of songs in the studio, both She Records and Natasha decided to call on her alter ego La Femme NIKITA to release a Hip Hop/Rap album, with Natasha Walton following closely behind her with an R&B release.

In June, 2006 She Records’ released La Femme NIKITA’s first single and music video “Ain’t Nuthin”. When asked about Hip-Hop today she says I love the fact that artist such as myself, with a huge fan base have the option of being independent. I pocketed 90% of the return off my download sales, a little over $40,000 to date. She quickly created a national buzz selling worldwide attracting major label attention!

In the early 1970’s, bubble gum rock was on its way out the door. Different types of music were beginning to blossom; fusion, funk, hard rock, and of course punk rock. While rock and roll had always represented rebellious human experience, punk rock took that mold and broke it over its knee. Punk might very well be characterized as the “most deviant part of the human soul” expressed as music.

While rebellion is not a new concept, punk was the first style of music to take raw, angry, atom bomb emotions and put it into music. In the early and mid 1970’s, bands like Iggy Pop and the Stooges, The New York Dolls, and The Ramones set the anti- establishment mantra for a generation of teens. These punk rockers were famous for not giving a damn what magazines and media thought of them. As a matter of fact, they didn’t seek media attention, the media sought them. A big theme in punk music is anarchy or rebellion against anything that seeks to clamp down and force people to behave instead of thinking for yourself.

This included, and still includes, rebellion against authority, class or caste, pretension, religious hatred, snobbery in general, or anything else that imposed too much dogma on humanity. How do you beat these idiotic ideas? By appealing to the most basic part of human beings and their self interests. An angry song stirs up people and makes them think, but it has to shock your conscience. Iggy Pop smeared peanut butter on himself at one concert while he sang. Sid Vicious cut himself during one show and bled all over.

Keyboards come in a variety of sizes with various bells and whistles depending on your needs. Of course, this also means they come in a wide price range, so it’s important to weigh up what you need with what you can afford, as well as ensuring you get the best value for money. Whether it’s your first ever keyboard, or you’re simply adding to your existing collection, it’s imperative that you ask a few key questions before you buy any model.

Firstly, you should ensure your keyboard is a full-sized model. Keyboards range from around half-sized for kids right up to full sized keys covering a number of octaves. It is important that you make sure your keyboard is full size if you are serious about learning. The smaller sized keyboards will keep you going if you’re learning how to play, but soon enough you will require the full range of keys as you tackle more complex or involved pieces. Unless you want to have to upgrade after six months, don’t opt for a smaller keyboard.

The next thing to think about is whether or not your keyboard includes a stand. If it does include a stand, great. If not, you’re going to have to buy one, so factor this into your costing. Additionally, consider whether the keyboard is touch-sensitive. A touch sensitive keyboard allows you to add your own dynamics, i.e. ‘louds and softs’ as you play, to give more texture to your piece. Traditionally keyboards are not touch sensitive, which means that regardless of how hard you press a key, it always produces the same note. Touch sensitivity may come at a price, but if your are looking for anywhere near performance quality, you should make sure your keyboard has it.

As the production bar in drum ‘n’ bass has been rased on an almost seasonal basis, it’s taken the learning curve with it. Even producers who don’t like the genre will often sit and marvel at the complexity and density of modern DnB productions. Also drum ‘n’ bass has a distinct sound, and it places emphasis on different areas of the mix to other genres, so that even producers in other types of electronic music can struggle to achieve that DnB vibe.

MUST KNOW DRUM ‘n’ BASS TIPS

1- Layering chopped up break beats (DRUM LOOPS) is a good way to get that authentic DnB sound. For a tight, modern sound, put each hits end point before the next drum sound occurs: simply leaving the end point at the end of the sample makes it easier to program junglistic beats, but you’ll either have to tune or time stretch it to make sure it plays at the correct tempo.

2- One of the main advantages of using really tightly chopped beats is that you can easily pitch bend your drum part up and down without it ever going out of time. This technique can be used to create stunning percussive effects. For the best results try combining this method withother forms of processing such as filtering or degrading effects.

3- If your track’s switch lacks bite, try using a different break beat or rythm pattern to keep the crowd on their toes, processing such as pitch shifting or flanging can do miracles here.

HOW JAZZ MUSIC WORKS
Jazz is like a musical language. When the musicians play, it’s as if they are talking to each other in jazz language. Most jazz music is based on a tune or a theme. The tune might be made up specifically or it might be based on a popular tune. A jazz group, or line-up has two parts: the rhythm section and the front line.

THE FRONT LINE
Front-line instruments are the ones that play solos during a jazz piece. They are given this name because the players usually stand in front of the rhythm section. Front-line instruments include the clarinet, trombone and the right-hand side of a piano.

THE RHYTHM SECTION
The rhythm section is a part that keeps a steady pulse. It also plays harmonies for the front-line instrument to improvise over. Rhythm section instruments include the bass guitar, double bass, drums, and the left-hand side of the piano.

RHYTHM AND SYNCOPATION
Most rhythms have a regular pulse or beat. Normally the stress, or accent, comes on the first beat, in a measure. In Jazz, the stress sometimes comes on the second beat, or in between the main beats. This is called syncopation. A tension is created between the steady pulse and the syncopated rhythm.

JAM SESSIONS
When musicians get together without an audience and experiment with tunes, it is known as a jam session. It is during sessions like these that most Jazz evolves.
